Lesson 1

This lesson will introduce students to the concept of Identity. This will first be facilitated through a class discussion on what identity is with guidance from the teacher. This will identify a baseline for students on what they already know and also learn from each other in a guided discussion. Students will then be introduced through a Presentation identity in relation to psychology, as well as examples of various artists that explore different aspects of identity. This lesson will go over works by: Kim Noble, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol, Stephen Hannock, Michael Reeder, Yinka Shonibare, and Chuck Close. Each Artist has a different perspective, style, and approach to the topic of identity. Students will also complete an Identity map in their sketchbooks.

Lesson 2

The second lesson will facilitate exploration and research artists and artwork in identity as well as develop 3 concept ideas for a painting. Students will research 2-3 artists, techniques, and ideas they are interested in. As a result of their investigation, students will develop 3 concept ideas for painting.

Lesson 3

In this lesson, students will begin to work on their paintings based off of their concept drawings in Lesson 2. Throughout the creating process, the teacher will give demonstrations of various painting techniques that the students will document in their sketchbooks in addition to their own investigation.

Lesson 4

In this lesson, students will finish their painting or series of paintings and write an artist statement about their work. They will also participate in a critique which will give students the opportunity to share their work and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Identity.
