Lesson 2

The second lesson will facilitate exploration and research artists and artwork in identity as well as develop 3 concept ideas for a painting. Students will research 2-3 artists, techniques, and ideas they are interested in. As a result of their investigation, students will develop 3 concept ideas for a painting or small series of paintings.

National Core Art Standards

Anchor Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work

VA:Cr1.2.IIIa: Choose from a range of materials and methods of traditional and contemporary artistic practices, following or breaking established conventions, to plan the making of multiple works of art and design based on a theme, idea, or concept.

Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding and local contexts. VA:Cn11.1.IIIa: Appraise the impact of an artist or a group of artists on the beliefs, values, and behaviors of a society.

Anchor Standard 7: Perceive and analyze artistic work

VA:Re.7.1.IIIa: Analyze how responses to art develop over time based on knowledge of and experience with art and life

Lesson Objectives

In this lesson Students will: (1) research 2-3 artists in relation to Identity using the handout as a guide, (2) create 3 concept ideas for Final Painting in their sketchbook

Introduction

Distribute Artist Exploration handout (Attachment B) and review Sketchbook requirements( Attachment C).

Procedure

1. Distribute and go over Artist Exploration Handout (Attachment B). Students will choose at least one artist from the ones discussed in the Lesson 1 Presentation and at least one additional artist of their choosing relating to the topic of Identity. (2-3 artists total)


2. Student will record answers into sketchbook (write or print out in sketchbook). Should include pictures of pieces chosen and resources referenced.


3. Distribute and go over Sketchbook Requirements (Attachment C) and checklist.


4. Based on conversations with students offer suggestions of artists they might be interested in for their exploration.


5. After investigation/towards end hand-out rubric for final project so they can plan and create 3 concept ideas

  • Distribute Artist Exploration handout (Attachment B), Sketchbook checklist & rubric (Attachment C) for students to during their research of artists.

  • Distribute Final Project Prompt/Rubric at the end of lesson (Attachment D)

Distribution and Clean-Up

Students are responsible for bringing their sketchbooks to every class. The teacher will distribute handouts at the beginning of class and they will also be available for download on the website.

Closure

Go over student exploration and the 3 concept drawings with students individually to check in on their level of understanding and that they are ready to continue to the final project.

Note: There is a summative sketchbook check at the end of the unit.


Checks of sketchbook throughout unit are for the benefit of teacher and student for individual feedback and to ensure understanding of topic and/or lesson
