Art Identity Unit
Lesson 3
In this lesson students will begin to work on their paintings based off of their concept drawings in Lesson 2. Throughout the creating process the teacher will give demonstrations of various painting techniques that the students will document in their sketchbooks in addition to their own investigation.

Lesson Objectives
In this lesson students will: (1) create a painting or short series of paintings of aspects of identity that resonate strongly with them (2) add studies of painting demos demonstrated by teacher into sketchbook.
Introduction
In this lesson, students will be able to begin their final painting or painting series once their concept drawings have been reviewed by the teacher.
Procedure
1. Once students concept drawings have been reviewed by the teacher they are able to start working on their final project.
2. At this point in the unit students will be at different stages of the creating process with some working faster than others. The teacher should take opportunities to demonstrate/show videos of different painting techniques (such as the techniques listed on the Art Techniques and Vocab handout, Attachment E)
3. Encourage students to experiment with different techniques in their sketchbook and give feedback on work in progress

Distribution and Clean-Up
Students are responsible for bringing their sketchbooks to every class. They are also expected to know where to find, take care of, and expose of any materials in the classroom. Each workspace is expected to be clean at the end of class. The Art technique and Vocab sheet will be distributed by the teacher and/or available for download on the website.
Closure
Individually check in with each student to make sure they are in a good place for their work and on pace to start working on their artist statement in Lesson 4.
Assessment
Formative Assessment: Sketchbook Check
Exploration of painting techniques
Check-in on concept process and execution.
Note: There is a summative sketchbook check at the end of the unit.
Checks of sketchbook throughout unit are for the benefit of teacher and student for feedback and to ensure understanding of topic.
